Study Abroad Application Instructions

1.  Create an online Study Abroad Account

Be sure to create an online account and fill-in all of the layers of your profile, including contact information, academic information, program preferences, and emergency contact(s).  You will login to this account and use it to communicate with the International & Exchange Program Office at UMF and to keep track of various application and enrollment documents.

2.  Advising Process and Choosing a Program

You must make an advising appointment with the International & Exchange Programs Office.  We can help you in choosing an appropriate program for your academic needs and ensure that you understand the application process, financial obligations, and transfer of credit for Study Abroad.

Your Academic Advisor is a very important person to speak with about your plans to Study Abroad.  Although registration will happen later, it is imperative that both you and your Academic Advisor begin the planning process with a clear understanding of which required courses and how many electives you still need to complete your degree at UMF.

If you currently utilize financial aid to pay for your education at UMF, be sure to discuss your potential Study Abroad program with one of the Financial Aid Officers at UMF.  In most cases, your financial aid can be used to pay for your Study Abroad program.  There are also several opportunities to apply for Study Abroad scholarships.

MINIMUM Eligibility Requirements:
  • Sophomore standing or above at time of exchange or study abroad
  • Current cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (GPA of 2.5 or higher must be maintained through semester immediately preceding the exchange/program)
  • Enrolled at UMF, full-time during the semester immediately preceding the exchange/program
  • Completed any/all incomplete grades earned in previous terms
  • Satisfied all financial obligations to UMF prior to program/exchange departure
  • Not currently under any campus disciplinary actions for violations of code of conduct or academic or student conduct
3.  Required Forms

Every student participating in a Study Abroad program is REQUIRED to fill out several online and paper documents.  Thus, it is essential that you understand the necessary forms you need to fill out.

Application Materials include:

  • UMF online Study Abroad Application
  • TWO completed reference forms (download form and return completed forms)
  • Official Transcript  (in sealed envelop)
  • Sponsoring Organization application (print copy if online application)
If you will be applying to a UMF Semester in France through PMFQ program, you must fill out a paper application.

All UMF students must submit Study Abroad application materials to the International & Exchange Programs Office and be approved to Study Abroad, BEFORE you will be eligible to Study Abroad on any program.

4.  Meet Deadlines

Students are responsible for meeting posted application deadlines to be eligible to Study Abroad.  Incomplete application and/or enrollment documents make a student ineligible to Study Abroad.

UMF Study Abroad Applications must be submitted and completed by:
Fall and Academic Year Programs:    Application deadline is April 1
Spring semester Programs:                Application deadline is October 1
Summer Programs:                           Application deadline is March 1
